First Career Days at Toschas Labs
How I started my carrier, what I learned and what I didn’t learn while I was working at Toschas Labs, small software company in Belgrade. I was working at Toschas Labs as junior web developer for one year, from Septembar 2013 – Septembar 2014.
How I got the job?
As a beginner with no work experience and without university it was not so easy to find a job as a programmer. When you have no experience and no university, only thing that can help you get hired are your skills and experience based on your personal projects. Fortunately, I had one project that I was working with on. My first web based project in WordPress helped me to learn basic web development and to get a job as junior developer.
How was it?
Most of my time at Toschas I was outsourcing for Swiss based client building Single Page Applications. Most of the applications were SaaS products.
On front-end I was developing in AngularJS, Bootstrap, HTML and CSS. Back-end was running on PHP Symfony framework. Database was MySQL with help of Doctrine ORM.
I felt a lot of pressure because of constants deadlines. I think this is the common problem that all outsourcing companies have.
What I learned?
I had luck that Milos and Maja, the company founders, were following the new technologies and with their help I was learning them too.
The pressure was there but you need know how to handle it and that’s how I learned. Because of that pressure I had improved my programming skills. You really learn when you are knockdown.
As Jack Ma says…
Go to a small company. Normally, in a big company, it is good to learn processing; you are part of a big machine. But when you go to a small company, you learn the passion, you learn the dreams. You learn to do a lot of things at one time. So before 30 years old, it’s not which company you go to, it’s which boss you follow. A good boss teaches you differently.
Without knowing this, now I realized that I learned a lot of things to do and not just one process.
